Structure of Computer:(2) Software

In the last article, we saw a physical structure of computer. In fact, it is indispensable to our using computer . But, hardware alone cannot realize our comfortable lives. To realize that, software is needed.

What Is Software?
While hardware represents physical instruments such as mouse, software is group of dates and commands and composed of two parts mainly: basic software(OS) and application software(Application).
Application software
Application software, which is called 'application', is a kind of software that can  do various expert work such as spreadsheet, database management and so on. For example, browsers such as firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Safari are all applications. These are applications that are used to browse and use WWW. Also,Microsoft's product "Words", Excel", and "Access" are all software. Due to these applications, we can do various and a lot of tasks, leading to our comfortable lives.

Basic software(OS)
There are some people who use "Access" while the other people don't. But Functions such as printing and text entry are used by almost all people. The things that provide these functions are called "basic software" or "operating system". To say formally, OS is defined as the things that connect hardware and application smoothly. "Windows" , "Mac", Unix"and "Linux"  are all OS. Particually, former 3 OSs are used over the world.

Structure of Computer(1): Hardware

We have been seen application of computer, its history, famous persons and famous companies. Today, I will introduce concrete structure of computer to you particularly about physical devices.
chart1: conceptual diagram of computer
Conceptual  Diagram of Hardware
The chart1 above represents brief structure of computer. As the chart represents, computer is composed of 5 parts mainly: CPU, Input devices, Output devices, Memory, External storage. In particular, CPU is center of the 5parts and therefore explain CPU first and then do the others.

CPU
As a brain determines human's ability, quality of CPU is closely related to the speed of processing. When we buy a computer, we should pay attention to quality of CPU.
CPU is composed of two parts mainly, Control unit and Arithmetic logic unit.

The world-famous person in computer history

There are some people who contributed to development of computer science. Owing to their work, we can live a comfortable life. Today I will introduce such people.

Lawrence Edward "Larry" Page
Chart1: Lawrence Edward "Larry" Page
Summary
Lawrence "Larry" Page (born March 26, 1973) is an American computer scientist and Internet entrepreneur  and known as the co-founder of Google. Also, he is one of  the World's Billionaires for long years. As of 2011, his personal wealth is estimated to be $16.7 billion.

Business
In 1998, he and Sergey Brin founded  Google, that is known by almost all people as the most famous Internet and software corporation. Google Internet search engine adopts Page Rank, that is a link algorithm, named after Larry Page. It is his main achievements.
Before it has been developed, Internet search engines  was hard-to-use because past search engines couldn't return  proper results. Using another algorithm, it often returned the results including pages that are nothing to do with the search word.
But Page Rank have changed this situation. By using eigenvalue and probability, it evaluates pages' quality so that we can get proper results, like a peer review of theses. Owing to Page Rank, it has been easy for us to find adequate information.

Early Life and Education
In 1973, he was born in East Lansing, Michigan. Both his father and mother are computer science professors at Michigan State University. This may let him learn computer science. On his 6 years, he started to learn computer science. Then, he went to Michigan State University and specialized in Computer Engineering. Incidentally, while at the university, he created a ink jet printer made of Lego bricks . After graduated from the University, he went to graduate school of the Stanford University. He took time off school and founded Google.
